Telenor is the biggest mobile operator in Norway, with a subscriber
market share of 73%. Outside its domestic market it holds a
selection of mobile assets in countries as far-flung as Bangladesh,
Hungary, Malaysia, Montenegro, Russia,and Ukraine. The company
divides its European investments between two regions, one
encompassing the new markets of central and eastern Europe, the
other comprising the more mature markets of western Europe. Wholly
owned Telenor International holds shares in Sonofon in Denmark,
Connect Austria and Portuguese subsidiary Oni Way while Telenor B-Invest,
in which Telenor owns 73.33%, has 18% of Greece’s Cosmote. |

In April 2000 the Danish regulator, the National Telecom Agency (NTA,
also known as Telestyrelsen) issued tender documents for two GSM-900
and two GSM-1800 concessions. By the closing date in October
applications had been received from TDC (Tele Danmark), Sonofon,
Orange Denmark and Telia. As the only interested parties TDC Mobile
and Sonofon were automatically awarded licences in the 1800MHz
frequency while, at the end of January 2001, the two national GSM-900
licences went to Orange Denmark and Telia. |

Le secteur des télécommunications a connu une très forte croissance
ces dernières années, notamment grâce à l’essor de la téléphonie
mobile. Aujourd’hui, le téléphone mobile de troisième génération est
pratiquement une réalité. Dans la plupart des pays, les
investissements consacrés à la technologie UMTS (Universal Mobile
Telecommunications Systems), qui suscite des attentes importantes
auprès des utilisateurs potentiels, atteignent des niveaux
historiques. Une étude réalisée par le département Télécoms
de Taylor Nelson Sofres dresse un panorama complet du marché
de l’UMTS. Cette grande enquête internationale, menée dans 12 pays
d’Europe de l’Ouest et de l’Est ainsi qu’aux Etats-Unis, révèle
notamment que la notoriété de l’UMTS reste très faible auprès des
utilisateurs potentiels des services, particulièrement en France. |

North Africa:
Disappointment Looms Over GSM Tender Fees

Algeria and Tunisia are making steady steps toward the sale of GSM
licences later this year. In November, Algeria chose BNP-Paribas to
oversee the tender of a new mobile licence. The French bank recently
called for parties to express their interest by February 9th.
Likewise, Tunisia chose an international French bank in December to
assist in its tender and is expected to award its second GSM licence
by the end of April. In preparation for competition, state-owned
fixed and cellular operator Tunisie Telecom contracted Sweden's
Ericsson to increase its subscriber capacity to 500,000. |
