the U.S. grew by 11.9 percent in August 2001.

This figure compares to a 207.5 percent increase in unit sales for
August 2000. The 11.9 percent total was the worst growth performance
of the year even though average selling prices (ASP) have fallen to

According to leading marketing
information provider NPD INTELECT Market Tracking, sales of personal
digital assistants (PDAs) through retail, mail order and corporate
reseller channels for first half of 2000 (January - June)
approximated sales for all of 1999, suggesting that PDA sales will
more than likely double by the end of year 2000.

The new personal digital assistant (PDA), Handspring, has managed to
quickly garner consumer attention. In its first month of
distribution, April 2000, Handspring captured 18% of retail unit
sales and 14% of retail dollar sales. Despite Handspring’s
impressive debut, long-time leader Palm continues to sustain leader
status.
