"While four out of ten phones sold are Internet-capable, the
future of Internet-capable phones will be largely determined by
attractive pricing plans and development of applications valuable to
consumers. As location-based technologies and wider pipes become
available, there will be a whole host of new consumer benefits, such
as targeted promotions, entertainment, gaming, and relevant
information," commented Peter Arato, senior account executive at NPD
INTELECT.
"The fact that over half (55%) of the phones sold in fourth
quarter 2000 have included a Lithium Ion battery has translated to
tangible consumer value in longer talk and standby time. Two-thirds
of phones sold have at least three hours of talk time and over half
have over 100 hours of standby time," added Arato.
While most phones are sold with a plan including a monthly bucket
of minutes, 13% of phones are sold with a pre-paid plan.
According to NPD INTELECT, one-third of handsets sold weigh less
than five ounces and over two-thirds of cell phones have a display
with full graphics capability. "The two trends of miniaturization
and more elaborate displays pave the way for some of the new phones,
which will combine voice and full PDA capability," added Arato.
