NPD INTELECT Reports 1999 Year-End Data For
Personal Digital Assistant Category
3Com's PalmPilot Line Captures 85% Dollar Share
of Market
PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, February 28, 2000– NPD INTELECT,
a leading market research information provider, reports 1999 year-end
data for the personal digital assistants category. NPD INTELECT does
not include in the personal digital assistant category other
handheld computer products such as personal organizers and reference
databanks.
Total dollar sales of personal digital assistants reached
$436,466,000 in 1999. This represents a 60% dollar sales increase
over 1998’s $272,752,000.
The personal digital assistant category finished 1999 with
1,347,185 total unit sales, an 80.1% increase over 1998’s total unit
sales of 748,022.
The average price of a personal digital assistant was $323.98 in
1999, down 11.1% from 1998’s average price of $364.63.
The combined computer specialty/office specialty store channel
took 53.4% share of total personal digital assistant dollar sales in
1999. The mail order channel was next with 19.3% dollar share,
followed by electronics specialty stores at 17%. The corporate
reseller channel ended 1999 with 9.6% dollar share; discount stores
finished the year with 0.7% dollar share.
3Com’s PalmPilot led dollar sales in 1999, as in 1998. 3Com
products claimed five spots on a list of the top ten best-selling
items in the category for December 1999. Casio was next with 7%
dollar share for the year.
