E-Mail is the Dominant Online Activity Worldwide

Sending and receiving e-mail was the dominant online activity in 12 countries over the past six months, with at least 75% of households with Internet access participating in e-mail, according to the just-released Nielsen//NetRatings First Quarter 2002 Global Internet Trends report.

"We found that an impressive 90% of the adults in three major markets - Australia, the UK and the Netherlands - used e-mail over the past six months, though the percentages were high for all 12 countries.

The data on online activities is one of several new measures of Internet usage added to the Global Internet Trends service this quarter, along with changes to the reporting format instituted in response to client request for more flexibility, faster delivery, and an easier way to view internet usage information across all regions.

With the Q1 reports, Nielsen//NetRatings now reports on the top Internet Service Providers by country, speed of connection to the Internet and online activities such as email, chat, instant messaging, online radio and audio-visual usage. The reporting format has also been enhanced so that Global Internet Trends is now delivered in a flexible, user-friendly spreadsheet format that provides data and key findings in chart and table format and gives users the ability to cut and paste data for further analysis.

Global Internet Trends reports for all regions have now been consolidated into a single, comprehensive International report that allows clients to compare internet usage and access trends side-by-side for countries in Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America, as well as providing selected benchmarking measures for North America and Japan.
